Artist bio

I am located in Stanmore Bay on the beautiful Whangaparaoa Peninsula.
I retired from secondary school teaching in 2000 to become the artist I'd always
wanted to be. After a few year's painting and drawing, I saw my first print, liked it so
much I began attending printmaking classes at Mairangi Art Centre in intaglio
printmaking with Joan Taylor. I have explored many other printmaking techniques
myself: wood and linocut, drypoint, lithography and its modern equivalent pronto,
cyanotype, screen printing and solarprint, and I've taken many workshops with
visiting and local printmakers.
I have had my own studio and press at home since 2013 and also work from Estuary
Arts Centre (EAC) and Rata printmakers Studio at Lake House Arts Centre where I am
a member. I am a life member of our national body, the Print Council of Aotearoa
NZ.
For most of the 20 years I've been painting and making prints I've been inspired and
influenced by what I see around me in New Zealand, the landscape, the birds and
plants, the people. I love to teach printmaking and enjoy being able to share my
passion with other people, including teaching school holiday classes to juniors and
the regular Friday morning Hibiscus Coast printmaking group through EAC's open
studio programme.

Awards I've received that have meant something to me are:
2013 Peoples Choice award inaugural First Impressions National Printmaking
Exhibition at Mairangi Arts Centre.
2016 Finalist NZ Painting and Printmaking Awards, Hamilton Gardens.
2018 Worldwide Nga Tipu Takelake Indigenous Flora, Auckland Gardens Exhibition
then toured NZ.
2019 Supreme Winner Lake House Members Art Awards.
I consider the series of group exhibitions I have curated since 2019 to be major achievements. The first one, the “Overwintering Project”, in conjunction with the local Forest and Bird branch, was in the Foyer Gallery at EAC. In 2020 the “Overwintering Project” moved into the main gallery, with Forest and Bird's “Taonga
o te Ngahere”. “Where the Seabirds Go” in 2021/22 was held in the main gallery, with workshops and over 30 artists involved, but delayed because of Covid
Lockdown. In 2022/23 “Predator Free NZ 2050” began at the Auckland Botanic Gardens then moved to EAC in the main gallery, with more workshops and 30 plus artists involved. The group exhibition “Threatened” is scheduled for late 2025.
